Faith Over Fear Part 3: Receiving Grace & A Fresh Start

“Do it look like I own a horse?! ” Part 3: Receiving Grace & A Fresh Start

One of the most healing messages in the Faith Over Fear series is this: As a nurse, you are not defined by your mistakes.

Part 3, titled “Receiving Grace & a Fresh Start,” focuses on themes of grace, repentance, renewal, forgiveness, and the important reminder that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. This episode emphasizes that nursing students and professionals are not alone and need a supportive community.

This is crucial because nursing can feel overwhelming while you are learning.

– Perhaps you missed a question you should have known.

– Maybe you stumbled through a report.

 – You might have forgotten something during a skills checkoff.

– You may have left clinical, replaying everything in your mind.

Growth can feel uncomfortable, but remember: discomfort does not mean you are disqualified. Grace allows you to learn without living under condemnation. While it does not excuse carelessness, it does create space for correction, maturity, humility, and a fresh start.

Grace for the Nurse Who Made a Mistake

I have experienced moments of shame from my preceptor and other nurses over the years. One particular time, I needed to use soft wrist restraints on a patient. I retrieved them from the Pyxis system and asked my preceptor to show me how to tie the restraints, as I wasn’t sure how to do it. She replied, “It’s like tying a slip knot on a horse,” in front of our peers at the nurses’ station. I jokingly responded, “Does it look like I own a horse? Now come on.” Everyone, including her, laughed, and together we successfully restrained our patient with smiles.

So hear me clearly:

  • You can receive feedback and still feel called.
  • You can make a mistake and still grow.
  • You can have a tough day and still be on your way to becoming a compassionate, competent nurse.
  • You can start again.
